Use the following information to help assess your pets' health while getting medical attention.


First Aid

General skills:

Rectal Temperature, normal should be between 100.1 – 102.1

Basic bandaging by applying gauze and vet wrap over wound

Dog Fight:

Break up fight from a distance

Most damage is done from tearing, small holes can have serious wounds under the skin

Don’t underestimate, broken bones, internal bleeding and torn muscles might not be visible

Hit by car:

Move on board if possible

Beware of being bit

Keep dark and warm

Overheated (Temperture over 105.0):

Cool by soaking in water and / or using a fan

Can also cool using rubbing alcohol on pads and jugular viens (outside left and right side of the neck)

Provide water in small frequent amounts

Serious overheating damage may not be seen until 48 hours later, monitor carefully

Cut – Bleeding:

Apply pressure to wound

Tourniquet – above elbow or knee

Towel wrap wound

Choking:

It is very rare due to anatomy, check for healthy pink gums

Vomiting or Diarrhea:

Hold food for 24 hours then begin with chicken and rice

Eye damage:

Saline solution can be applied for foreign material in the eye or if the eye has popped out

Siezure:

Check time and note the length of seizure

Keep pet in a safe place

Call pet’s name and touch

Do not put fingers in the mouth

Check for pink healthy gum color

Fall:

Treat like hit by car

Hypothermia:

Warm slowly

Drowning:

Perform CPR

Treat for hypothermia

Bee Sting:

Treat with ice

Can give Benadryl call with a dose
